Active Volunteers Needed

Adult Program Assistant – Adult Literacy Tutor

Literacy volunteer tutors assist learners in achieving their learning goals and support basic reading, math and computer literacy activities through one-on-one support in a drop-in setting. The full volunteer position description is here.


  • Reliable
  • An understanding of the needs of the literacy learner and the challenges they have had in the learning process
  • Able to listen to the learner and provide words of encouragement and support
  • Patience and flexibility to support the learning needs of the learner
  • Creativity in approaches to learning, motivating and engaging the learner
  • Effectively work with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Good oral and written communication skills in English
  • Minimum 10 month commitment September–June

Schedule: Wednesday evenings, 5:00 to 7:00pm, plus monthly mentor meetings and activity planning time

Friends of the Library

The Friends of Brockville Public Library group is always looking for community members interested in lending time and expertise to an executive steering committee.

The Friends of the Library group is a non-profit, voluntary and charitable association dedicated to the enhancement of library services. This group supports services provided by the library through donating time and effort to sponsor special events and much needed resources.

The Friends group promotes literacy and cultural enhancement in the greater community.

This committee operates independently of the Brockville Public Library Board of Trustees.

As a member of the Friends group you can help with:

  • Committee meetings, strategic planning and administration
  • Event planning and event assistance
  • Meet the Author book talks
  • Advertising and marketing

Volunteer training is provided and all new volunteers with the Library will be required to complete Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities (AODA) and Integrated Accessibility Standard Regulations (IASR) training as well as a training and general orientation session.

You can use a computer to complete the training and/or print a copy of the training transcript at the Library.

Please download and complete the training forms and bring them to your appointed orientation time.
